|
2 Weeks Before Your
Move
|
| . |
Service your car,
especially if you're traveling to your new place by car. |
| . |
Make lodging arrangements
if traveling a long distance or if your new residence is not
ready for move-in. |
| . |
If you are moving from or
to a high rise, you may need to reserve an elevator for moving
day. |
| . |
Update e-mail address, if
necessary. Let your online friends and contacts know about
your move. |
| . |
If you have young
children, arrange for a babysitter on moving day. You can
concentrate on the move knowing your kids are watched and
safely out of the way. |
|
Move Week
|
| . |
Close or transfer bank
account, and get traveler's checks if needed. Clear out your
safety deposit box as well. Make sure to have money to pay
movers (some companies accept only cash). |
| . |
Notify the post office,
and your insurance and credit card companies of your move if
you haven't yet. |
| . |
Arrange for house cleaning
after you move. |
| . |
Donate the items that you
do not plan to move. Remember to collect receipts for tax
purposes. |
| . |
Back up your computer
files before disassembling and packing your system. |
| . |
Contact utilities to
cancel or transfer accounts. You'll want utilities on moving
day, so arrange to disconnect them after your move date. Have
utilities connected in your new place the day before you move
in. |
| . |
De-frost and clean your
refrigerator and freezer; clean your stove too. |
| . |
Confirm your travel plans
(flights, hotel, rental cards, etc). |
| . |
Confirm your new address
with the moving company. |
| . |
Drain your waterbeds
completely before your moving team arrives, making sure to
have a box to put the mattress in. Have all disassembly and
disconnection that is not included on your move completed
before your moving team arrives. Now is a good time to
purchase water conditioner to add when re-filling your
waterbed. |
| . |
Do a final walk-through of
your old residence, checking closets, drawers, etc. Turn off
all lights, lock all doors and windows, and leave keys with
your old property manager if applicable. |
| . |
Be available when the
moving truck arrives. Make sure all your boxes have arrived
undamaged before signing paperwork and letting movers leave. |
|
Settling In After
Your Move
|
| . |
Update your car
registration and driver's license. |
| . |
your local board of elections for specific registration
information. Ask them how to notify your previous voting
district of your change of address. |
| . |
Call your bank and have
new checks printed. |
| . |
Mail that has been
forwarded from your old address will have a yellow address
label on it. Notify the sender of your new address. |
| . |
Locate police and fire
stations as well as hospitals, gas stations and the post
office near your new home. |
| . |
Scout your new
neighborhood for shopping areas. You may need furniture, tools
or housewares unexpectedly. |
| . |
Provide your new doctor
and dentist with your medical history. You may need to request
your file from your previous doctor/dentist. |
| . |
Transfer insurance
policies to an agent in your new community. You may also wish
to make a detailed list of your belongings, their value and
your coverage. |
| . |
Moving can be stressful.
Watch for effects on family members and pets so you can give
comfort and a helping hand. |
